THUNDEREGG
Laid in Connecticut, incubated in New Jersey and Brooklyn, Will Georgantas’s 1990s four-track cassette project Thunderegg hatched into a full band on its ninth album in 2005 and has since recorded seven more, including two LPs (plus a seven-inch) with Alan Weatherhead (Sparklehorse, Magnolia Electric Co.) behind the board. Now Bleeding Gold is dropping the Egg’s full-length vinyl debut, Cosmos, recorded by Weatherhead in Oakland and featuring the Bay Area lineup (Alex Jimenez, bass; Reese Douglas, guitar; André Custodio, drums). Packaged in a deluxe gatefold and exploding with guitars, Cosmos is Thunderegg’s deepest plunge yet into space, blending the usual clever lyrics, sweet melodies, and ragged rocking with a layered roar that begs to be blasted. Influences like Luna, Teenage Fanclub, the Boo Radleys, Spiritualized, and Guided by Voices sometimes show through, but 20 years in, the Egg can’t help but be its own affably odd breed.
