Moses Gold is the creative vision of Manchester’s Phill Young. Formed in 2013 after the dissolution of his previous project, the critically acclaimed Christian AIDS/Stay+, Young re-emerged with some of the most extraordinarily heart-rending and beautiful music that the city has ever heard. Working with producer Ben Pearson (Espher) the wounded baritone of Young’s voice glows against a sparkling electronic backdrop. Vivid and visceral, Young’s expression of loneliness and regret is littered with melancholy and tiny glimpses of hope. Confrontational, but more emotionally than physically, he’s been described as “Ian Curtis trapped in a 21st century nightmare.”

Debut single ‘Paradise Lost’ features a collaboration with former bandmate and friend London based producer Stay Positive (Black Butter, RAMP, OWSLA) Young who has previously spoken with unerring honesty about his  long-term battle with depression, wants to create music people“can relate to and respond to. Not enough singers do that.”  After leaving his previous band it was vital for Young to continue to make music to challenge himself and his audience. Enter Moses Gold, meaning “Prophet of Greed” whose début single ‘Paradise Lost’ is a huge statement of intent and the first step in achieving the ambitious goal Young has set himself “to write an album as beautiful as ‘Kid A’ or as honest as ‘Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space’. ‘Paradise Lost’  is released March 10th on limited edition 12″ vinyl.

Golden Glow WEB

Golden Glow, the solo project of singer-songwriter Pierre Hall, is set to release a new 6-track EP, ‘Beauty / Duty’ on 27th January via Bleeding Gold Records, with a sound that echoes the laid-back, idyllic melodies of Real Estate and Wild Nothing. After some full band recording sessions with an outside producer, Pierre decided the sound was becoming almost too clinical and lost some of the magic that comes with the limitations of using more basic equipment. Pierre decided to abort the sessions and go back to the four-track, the result being the new 6-track EP, ‘Beauty / Duty’, influenced by Felt, New Order, Arthur Russell, Velvet Underground, The Cure, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

BG017 | A Life Of Tragic Parties

Posted in Band Update, Music with tags , , , on February 14, 2012 by bleedinggold

Finding inspiration in the good-time sounds of the 60s and 70s – S’s are a Manchester-based duo in their early twenties, who loosely define themselves as ‘experimental pop-stars’. Like Elton John’s bastard sons – they send trans-atlantic signals to their brothers and sisters in the states, along with trans-channel signals directly to their freres and soeurs in Europe, and beyond.
Fans of The Strokes, David Bowie, Best Coast and The Beatles should prepare themselves for a 2012 release that will soothe and arouse them into an indie-induced coma.
‘A Life of Tragic Parties’ showcases the lo-fi talent of two lo-fi young men.

Songs For Walter – Meet Me At The Empire E.P.

7″ released early APRIL 2012 on Bleeding Gold Records (USA)

[Limited Edition hand-made CDs from Red Deer Club (UK)]

“…songs that you feel have always been with you and remind you of all your favourite memories…life changing”   Jacob Graham   ‘The Drums’

When it comes to family, many of us keep things close to our chests. But rather than keeping his kin hidden in an old dusty photo album, Songs For Walter’s Laurie Hulme is more likely to befound making a song about them. In particular his late grandfather Walter. Onelisten to the Songs For Walter EP and what you’ll hear is a stunning memoir of one extraordinary fellow and his strangely wonderful world.

You could call this EP the perfect tribute. Walter was a living, breathing story himself. From his much-loved caravan holidays in Scotland and Wales brilliantly depicted by Ukulele song ‘Tin Can’, to the bittersweet romance of lead-track ‘Meet Me At The Empire’ – a tale of Laurie’s grandparents’ first date to the Empire theatre – each song is like a yellowing polaroid taking you further into another chapter of Walter’s life.

But make no mistake; this is not simply a nostalgia trip. Equally inspired by Lou Reed and John Cale’s “SongsFor Drella”, the EP is a personal musical anecdote exuding the kind of rawness to only come from a self-produced release. “I really love lo-fi stuff, there’s something so much more honest about it,” explains Laurie, “What you lose in quality you gain in character.”

And that’s what really sets Songs For Walter apart. This EP has bags of character. Each song stands up on its own but together creates a legacy reflecting a Bill Callahan/Smog-like balance of sincerity and absurdity, The Spinto Band in reflective mode, or perhaps new kid on the blogs, fellow one-man bedroom outfit Youth Lagoon.

BG009 | The Knife 7″ by David Warren

This one is different. I’d even go so far as to say it is special. Spoken word, organ drones, surreal storytelling. Something about the tracks on The Knife draw you in, make you want to hear them again, just to make sure you heard what you thought you heard. That is when the subtle melodies swagger into your subconcious, loitering for days. This one needs to be heard on your turntable, the mastering is especially warm on these 70 gram vinyl copies.

David Warren’s debut single The Knife is available on 2 choices of colored vinyl; Swamp Green [ed.100] or Hefeweizen [ed.150].
