BG102 ROSE CHARIOTEyes Just Follow/Lenkille” digital single

Rose Chariot is the moniker of 26-year-old Mancunian producer/musician Ross Marriott. His new material – recorded between Manchester and Lisbon – is colourful, dramatic and dense, drawing from influences such as Jai Paul, The Cardigans, Grimes, Foals, Prince, Björk and Interpol.

“Last year I moved to Lisbon, Portugal, where I was based for a year,” explains Ross. “It was a really interesting time; I got mugged twice, ended up in hospital, and also met some really fascinating people. With the new songs, I tried to capture the feeling of living in a new place where everything’s exciting, raw and mysterious. It was a huge contrast to the ‘coldness’ of England, so I tried to
use that as my inspiration.”

BG071 // 10 Feb 2014

Songs For Walter aka Laurie Hulme is back with another slice of folk pop, this time armed with a banjo and a story about his Grandfathers philosophy, communism and constitutional stance about Laurie changing his university course to politics.

The title is from the philosopher: Thomas Hobbe’s ‘Leviathan’ of which Laurie studied during his time at university. Hobbes says that ungoverned man would be constantly at war because of Competition, Diffidence and Glory. This is a comprehensible story about family life and how it can affect your studies, read into it as much as like.

Laurie Hulme on Golden Glow’s “Beauty / Duty”

Posted in Band Update with tags , , , , , on January 17, 2014 by bleedinggold

I first met Pierre (Golden Glow), and then later that night Laurie, on a trip to the UK in 2011 when the band THE NOTES had toured a bit in France and I played tour-dad. Before the guys headed back to Uni in Southampton and I returned home to the US, we traveled up to Manchester to meet up with Pierre. He and I had already begun planning the release of his debut album and this was a good time to meet face to face. We met for a pint, went to Piccadilly Records, had some more drinks, met up with Pierre’s friends that would eventually make up the live band for Golden Glow, and continued the party until there were no other places open in the city. Legendary night!

I asked Laurie Hulme (aka Songs For Walter) – co-producer of the new Golden Glow EP “Beauty/Duty” – to answer 4 questions about the making of the album.

P+Ltreated

BleedingGold: How did you get involved with the recording of the EP?

LaurieHulme: Obviously I really enjoyed playing in GG. Pierre writes great tunes and he allowed us all a certain amount of freedom to develop parts or play things subtly differently when we played live. Pierre records most of his stuff on his 4 track but he talked about wanting more control over the mix and with us practically living next door to each other it made sense to mix in my (very humble) home studio.

BG: What is your favorite track and why?

LH: Probably ‘The Scene.’ When we first played it live it was a lot faster. The version on here is so much dreamier, it has a kind of effortlessness to it and the Anna Karina vocal sample fits so well.

BG: Knowing Pierre the little bit that i do, i’m assuming there were some crazy nights involved – care to share any stories of over-drinking, etc possibly related to the recording?

LH: We probably spent ten times the amount of time talking about the fact we were gonna do this EP than it took to actually sit down and do it. We’d often mix for a bit and then head out into town. We had a practise room right in the middle of town which we’d often visit in the small hours after the bars had closed and play music at ridiculous volumes through the PA into the morning. I recall one morning when Pierre was so hungover he went to work wearing his slippers!

BG: Your thoughts on Pierre’s move to London?

LH: I think Pierre is really suited to London. I know he’s loving being in the thick of it already. He knew pretty much everyone in Manchester so I guess it’s very different for him being more anonymous down there, perhaps a lot more refreshing.

10 Bleeding Gold cover songs by other Bleeding Gold artists!!

Bleeding Gold will be slowing down for the remainder of the year. We are taking a break to reassess the current musical landscape, pay off some serious business debt and return to the fold at a later date with a new business plan that will be better for the artists, the label, and most importantly, the fans.

The download is FREE – but if there is anything you can give, know that the money will go into helping Bleeding Gold return like a phoenix!

Cheers!

Family Hold Back - Artwork

SONGS FOR WALTER   //   FREE DOWNLOAD

Family sayings stick to the memory like glue. No matter how much you try to shake them for fear of turning into your parents, time-worn words of wisdom come flooding back should the right situation present itself. No stranger to this is Songs For Walter – to date each song has emerged as a musical narrative with family life at its heart, and new single Family Hold Back is no exception.

“’Family Hold Back’ was something Mum used to say,” recalls Songs For Walter alter-personality Laurie Hulme. “It was something her parents told her, then she told my brother and I at social occasions to stop us from gorging ourselves in front of others at buffets!”

On the surface it would seem that motherly advice has been taken. Lighter-than-air vocals reminiscent of Mercury Rev’s ethereal tones flow alongside an infectious ukulele melody and four to floor bass drum making it not only recall the stripped-back, traditional sound of Songs For Walter’s self-titled debut EP, but also the epitome of Englishness in its truest sense – amenable, considered, and always polite.

But don’t be fooled, for Songs For Walter has always been a master of trickery presenting everyday scenarios that represent far deeper lying issues – here a seemingly innocent party spread masquerades as a deliberately misleading yet astute commentary on social etiquette, over-indulgence and addiction.

“I’m just hoping i can find some kind of balance,” sings Hulme at the end of the song. Whatever that balance is, there’s no doubting that Family Hold Back is Songs For Walter at its most accomplished sounding yet.

His last singles ‘Tougher Than A Soldier’s Boots’ and ‘Moon / Two Out Of Ten’ gained multiple radio plays by Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq and Tom Ravenscroft. Having spent the last 8 months furiously bringing his last single and debut EP to life with numerous live performances around the country and relishing a work ethic just as strong, Songs For Walter’s Laurie Hulme has been a busy man.

Building a momentum to release a free single each month up until Summer 2013, in which a lovely piece of vinyl will be released documenting this amazing story of ‘Songs For Walter’.

SONGS FOR WALTER

‘Tougher Than a Soldier’s Boots’ b/w ‘Where Are You Going?’

Having spent the last 7 months furiously bringing his self-titled debut EP to life with numerous live performances around the country and relishing a work ethic just as strong, Songs For Walter alter-ego Laurie Hulme has been bashing out new songs as though they’re going out of fashion. And here it is, the pick of the latest bunch; a 2 and half minute trip of lo-fi strummery that comes perfectly timed with its autumnal meanderings.

Sutja Gutiérrez

Sutja Gutiérrez and Bleeding Gold Records present “Death Is My Lover, Life Is Your Wife / Weekend Boy”  7inch vinyl edition. “Death Is My Lover, Life Is Your Wife” was written by Sutja Gutiérrez during a short period where Sutja had some cancer tests at the hospital. Don’t worry, he is at no risk! “Weekend Boy” was written by Sutja Gutiérrez during his last disappointment with nightlife. Please, Smile.

Songs For Walter – Meet Me At The Empire E.P.

7″ released early APRIL 2012 on Bleeding Gold Records (USA)

[Limited Edition hand-made CDs from Red Deer Club (UK)]

“…songs that you feel have always been with you and remind you of all your favourite memories…life changing”   Jacob Graham   ‘The Drums’

When it comes to family, many of us keep things close to our chests. But rather than keeping his kin hidden in an old dusty photo album, Songs For Walter’s Laurie Hulme is more likely to befound making a song about them. In particular his late grandfather Walter. Onelisten to the Songs For Walter EP and what you’ll hear is a stunning memoir of one extraordinary fellow and his strangely wonderful world.

You could call this EP the perfect tribute. Walter was a living, breathing story himself. From his much-loved caravan holidays in Scotland and Wales brilliantly depicted by Ukulele song ‘Tin Can’, to the bittersweet romance of lead-track ‘Meet Me At The Empire’ – a tale of Laurie’s grandparents’ first date to the Empire theatre – each song is like a yellowing polaroid taking you further into another chapter of Walter’s life.

But make no mistake; this is not simply a nostalgia trip. Equally inspired by Lou Reed and John Cale’s “SongsFor Drella”, the EP is a personal musical anecdote exuding the kind of rawness to only come from a self-produced release. “I really love lo-fi stuff, there’s something so much more honest about it,” explains Laurie, “What you lose in quality you gain in character.”

And that’s what really sets Songs For Walter apart. This EP has bags of character. Each song stands up on its own but together creates a legacy reflecting a Bill Callahan/Smog-like balance of sincerity and absurdity, The Spinto Band in reflective mode, or perhaps new kid on the blogs, fellow one-man bedroom outfit Youth Lagoon.
