Bleeding Gold is dropping Thunderegg‘s full-length vinyl debut, Cosmos, recorded by Alan Weatherhead (Sparklehorse, Magnolia Electric Co.) in Oakland and featuring the Bay Area lineup (Alex Jimenez, bass; Reese Douglas, guitar; André Custodio, drums). Packaged in a deluxe gatefold and exploding with guitars, Cosmos is the Egg’s deepest plunge yet into space, blending the usual clever lyrics, sweet melodies, and ragged rocking with a layered roar that begs to be blasted.

VALERIE – Arranged Marriage: “The material collected here in this short release was half written on the fly, half slowly gathered in my subconscious over several weeks at the end of 2017. Last year was quite the adventure in personal growth for me. The cover I created for this release was collaged out of a sewing manual from the 1960s that the generations before me might have put to its intended purpose.. but I named this record in honor of my independence from old ideas, so here’s to a better use.” –L. Valerie
‘Arranged Marriage‘ is a brief but poignant take on the stumble into adulthood.

BG119 | Drive-thru Towns & Flyover States
Posted in Band Update, Music with tags BG119, BGR, San Diego, sickballoons on January 23, 2018 by bleedinggoldWhat began as a modest lo-fi bedroom project, now after almost a decade in Sick Balloons has blossomed into a full fledged affair, spearheaded by a rotating cast of musician friends, siphoning moments from their full-time bands. Members of Trouble in the Wind, Duchess, and local stalwarts The Tractormen have all been folded into Scott’s nostalgia funded indie meanderings. After various shifts and turns, the band settled in with another amalgamation, coinciding just slightly before the release of the band’s fourth album, ‘telescopes (on) parade,’ the last to feature founding member Glynnis Johns’ contributions on bass.
Post-‘telescopes’, the band acquired another north county multi-instrumentalist and comrade, Jesse Lee (from the Paragraphs), to round out the indefinite open door that is the balloons. Pulling inspiration from indie cult rockers such as Pavement, Guided By Voices and Dinosaur Jr, this fuzz-craving quartet pocket punk-informed pop gems in under three minutes or less, with equal nods to british & american shoegaze rock.

BG117 | Let The Machine Get It
Posted in Band Update, Music with tags ariellevine, BG117, BGR on December 10, 2017 by bleedinggold
Let The Machine Get It is a construct of musical ideas collected over and inspired by the varying terrains and unpredictable gear shifts of the last five plus years. A lyrical knack for exploring darker truths beyond the light and humor in mankind’s darkest moments, Ariel Levine turns his external satirical candor inward. It’s a conceptual story arc that encompasses the desire for something greater, the fear of losing ones connection to the world by an increasing dependence on technology, and the looming truth that is “wherever you go, there you are”. LTMGI is set to be the most personally revealing collection of songs in his career to date.

DREAM JOINTS

Posted in Band Update, Music with tags BG110, BGR, Cassette, Low Points, San Diego on January 24, 2017 by bleedinggold
Low Points are a quintessentially Southern California band. Mixing the sing along choruses of bands like Weezer with the sugary, DGAF surf fuzz of early WAVVES, Low Points’ debut EP ’Feels’ is bursting with stony slacker punk hooks. Led by songwriter Kevin Vega (Space Heat) and consisting of Jakob McWhinney (Space Heat, Ex-The Soaks, Spooky Cigarette), Frank Mindingall (Ale Mania, Northern Tigers, Spooky Cigarette) and Jeremy Hoover, Low Points are a fresh and honest take on garage pop.
The band balance surf rock rhythms and hard-hitting guitar riffs with deeply personal lyrics dealing with alienation and depression to create a sound that is at once catchy and haunting. Their four song debut, ‘Feels’ bounds from influences like the gritty garage pop of Mike Krol, pseudo emo-revival of Cloud Nothings to the surf punk of Tijuana Panthers, all the while maintaining a unique and memorable voice.
‘Feels’ will be released on March 3rd, 2017 through Field Trips & Bleeding Gold Records.
BG111 | So Much Fun
Posted in Band Update, Music with tags 7", BG111, BGR, Dream Joints, lathe on January 24, 2017 by bleedinggold
Dream Joints’ long awaited debut 7” perfectly encapsulates the hauntingly catchy nature of tripped out garage rock aficionado Mike Turi’s (Wild Wild Wets, The Old In Out) solo project. The A side, ‘So Much Fun’ finds him awash in dirty, droney synths. Languid vocals are smeared, dream-like, across the tracks noise pop face. It’s a sound that somehow feels as uplifting as it is foreboding. B side, ‘Dust’, a dirgey, psychedelic tinged dive into a rock and roll wasteland, follows suit. Pairing a hypnotic progression with tinkling, pulsating keys, ‘Dust’ is as much the soundtrack for long drives through the dark empty of desert, as it is for sweaty, gritted teeth nights in packed underground clubs.
With the gloomy psychedelia of The Growlers, the spaced out vocals of Jesus & Mary Chain and the expansive instrumentation of Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dream Joints weave together a patchwork of influences to create a unique sound that stretches from vampiric to blissful. All the while sounding immediate and absolutely vital.
Dream Joints’ debut 7” So Much Fun / Dust will be released in February, 2017 through Bleeding Gold Records in preparation for the release of full length ‘Just Like Medicine’ in April.
